114th Annual Warrenton Horse Show

Horse Show Grounds, Warrenton..... The Horse Show Grounds open at 8:00am
60 E. Shirley Avenue, Warrenton, VA
Drawing many local and out of state exhibitors, this show remains to be a popular event
over the Labor Day weekend. Some exciting features of the show include, Hunter classes,
Ladies Side Saddle, Leadline, and Walk-Trot for children.Saturday features the
Thoroughbred and Non-Thoroughbred Hunter Breeding and the USEF National
Breeding Championship, for yearlings, two year olds, and three year olds.Saturday
night will host the $5,000 Hunter Classic sponsored by Warrenton/Miller Toyota and
Sunday will present the foxhunter classes, and Side Saddle.
This years Show will benefit Head Start & Bright Stars, The Fauquier SPCA,
The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Association.
The show begins at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday and at 8:00 am each other day, with
evening classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 per person, which
can be purchased at the gate, and children 12 and under are free. There will be food
available, as well as other gift concessions and tack shops. For information call

Great Meadow, host to the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races, is a world class
international polo field that has been described as one of the best playing surfaces
between New York and Aiken. Great Meadow Polo Club has over 75 playing members,
making it one of the largest in the region.
During the summer more than 20,000 fans - young professionals as well as families --
gather at Great Meadow with tailgates and picnics to watch the Twilight Polo program.

History Hike: James Ball
Meet at the Visitor Center.... 10am - 12 Noon
Explore the past and get the inside story on these hikes through history. Take a walk
with our Park Historian and learn about the people and events that shaped this land
from Colonial times to now. Travel the Boston Mill Road to the new James Ball Trail. 
Learn about Captain Ball and his Colonial land grant.Wear comfortable hiking footwear
and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Sunscreen
and insect repellent are highly recommended. 

Where on the Trail Ranger Vanessa?
Rolling Meadows Trail.... 1pm - 3pm
Lace up your hiking boots, grab a daypack and head out on our beautiful park trails! 
While you are exploring our backcountry, keep an eye out for Ranger Vanessa.  She
never hits the trails without her Discovery Pack, fun hands-on activities, and great
information for hikers of all ages.  Today, she will be studying the grasses on the
Rolling Meadows Trail.  Find her on the trail and help her look for meadow vole nests
and signs of other small mammals that call the grasslands home.

Full Moon Walk
Meet at the Blue Ridge Trailhead.... 6:30pm - 8pm
Experience the park in a whole new light - moonlight! As the sun sets, our Ranger
leads you up the mountain. Let your eyes adjust to the dimming light and let your ears
pick up the sounds of the emerging nightlife. When you reach the top of the ridge, enjoy
the beauty of the Crooked Run Valley bathed in the light of the full moon. Bring a
flashlight for the return trip.
Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and a wind-proof jacket and bring plenty of water. The
hike is 1.5 miles round trip and is moderately difficult. This hike is weather-dependent;
excessive clouds or rain will result in cancellation. Contact the park before 5 p.m. on
the day of the hike if the forecast is questionable.

beautification project and a memorial dedication for the "Fallen Hero's of Fauquier

bed thanks to the Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.  At Noon gather
at the Corporal Morgan trailhead for the dedication of a new memorial honoring those

Civil War Bivouac
Historic Area: Mount Bleak Yard.... 11am - 4pm
Get up-close and personal with history!  Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a Civil
War bivouac.  Meet with a trio of Confederate soldiers who have set up camp on the Settle's lawn. 
Learn about the daily life of a soldier and see their weapons, uniforms and accoutrements. 
The soldiers will be present both Saturday and Sunday, with ongoing interpretation throughout
the weekend.

Hike with a Friend
Meet at the Lost Mountain Trailhead.... 9am - 12 Noon
Explore the scenic wonders of Sky Meadows with a “Friend” as your guide. Join Marion
McCoubrey, a Friends of Sky Meadows Board member and a Virginia Master Naturalist,
for a leisurely hike along the beautiful park trails. Wear comfortable hiking footwear and
dress appropriately for the weather.  Bring plenty of water and snacks. Sunscreen and
insect repellent are highly recommended.

Flutter By, Butterfly
Meet at the Visitor Center.... 1pm - 3pm
Meet Volunteer Naturalists Mary Alexander and Steve Malone from the Washington Area Butterfly
Club at our Visitor Center.  They will lead a walk along park trails in search of butterflies, assisting
with netting and identification as you go.  Bring binoculars and water and wear comfortable shoes.

Second Saturday Craft Workshop
Historic Area.... 1pm - 3pm
Children and adults of all ages can get their minds working and their creative juices flowing at this
monthly crafting workshop.  Each month from April through December will feature a different
history- or nature-themed craft project.  Programs meet on the second Saturday of each month,
from 1-3 p.m.  This program is offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of the
Friends of Sky Meadows.

Medicines of the Enslaved

Enslaved Africans brought traditional medicinal practices to the New World.  They also created new medicines based on the plants that grew where they lived. Often, they preferred these homemade remedies to their master’s medicines.  Come to the Log Kitchen and discover how enslaved workers healed with these plant-based medicines.

The Rappahannock RoughRide is a self-paced, multi-level cycling challenge for the
recreational or serious cyclist, covering some of Virginia’s most beautiful countryside.
Courses range from 12, 35 and 60 miles over paved roads or a 20 or 30 mile mixed
terrain RoughRide. The first 350 registrants earn the right to wear the coveted

Twilight Polo at Great Meadow

Great Meadow, host to the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races, is a world class
international polo field that has been described as one of the best playing surfaces
between New York and Aiken. Great Meadow Polo Club has over 75 playing members,
making it one of the largest in the region.
During the summer more than 20,000 fans - young professionals as well as families --
gather at Great Meadow with tailgates and picnics to watch the Twilight Polo program.
Two matches are held every Saturday night beginning at 7:00 P.M. (gates open at 6:30
P.M) until mid-September. Stay after the polo matches for moonlight music and dancing.

The evening begins with our half-hour "Junior Astronomer" program for children ages 5-12. Immediately following the kids' program will be a multi-media presentation on the latest in U.S. space research. Then join our Volunteer Star Guide for a night sky tour. Finish the evening by looking at deep space objects through large telescopes provided by members of the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club. If the sky is cloudy, only the "Junior Astronomer" and multi-media programs will be presented. No entrance to the park after 8:30 p.m.  Parking for this event is $5.00 per vehicle.
